What is working, where, and who made it work. Read the whole turn of the earth in two minutes, then go as deep as you like.
Researchers at Egypt's Agricultural Research Center have built a solar-powered cooling unit to keep fish fresh aboard small vessels, replacing the salted ice that fishermen otherwise carry. The insulated plywood chamber holds three perforated aluminium shelves and is chilled by three Peltier modules cooling a water loop, with fans circulating air and thermostats holding the interior at five degrees Celsius. A 300-watt panel, charge controller and 12-volt 100-amp-hour battery run the system off-grid.
The economics were modelled on an artisanal fisherman landing three kilograms a day across 240 fishing days a year, giving 720 kilograms of preserved fish annually. With a build cost of about $182 and yearly maintenance of $27.3, the team estimated a payback period of 0.15 years. Performance was validated statistically using 10,000 Monte Carlo simulations that accounted for weather variability and measurement uncertainty.
The telling number is not five degrees but three kilograms a day: the arithmetic only closes because the fisherman is small. Ice was never really a cooling technology so much as a supply route that had to be fed every trip, and this box simply deletes the route. Whether Peltier efficiency improves matters less than the fact that nothing now has to arrive by boat.

At the end of last year Timor-Leste had exactly one megawatt of solar installed nationwide, according to IRENA, up from zero the year before. A financing package signed this month now commits the country to a single project of 73.7 megawatts of grid-connected solar plus an 80.2 megawatt-hour battery — its first utility-scale renewable plant and its first independent power producer. The output is expected to equal the typical consumption of around 80,000 households.
The $85.7 million package, closed in July 2026, blends senior loans from the Asian Development Bank, the World Bank's IFC and Japan's JICA with concessional tranches from Canadian and Japanese-backed funds. State utility Eletricidade de Timor-Leste will buy the power under a 25-year agreement, and the plant is intended to cut a diesel habit that made fossil fuels nearly the whole of the country's energy mix in 2024.
The telling figure here is not the seventy-four megawatts but the one megawatt it lands beside. Countries at the bottom of the renewables ladder rarely climb it rung by rung; they wait until the finance closes and then jump the whole staircase at once. What was scarce was never sunlight or engineering, but a first signature that banks were willing to stand behind.

Italy's environment and energy ministry has cleared a 599 MW agrivoltaic plant in Puglia, granting the Spanish developer Solaria a positive environmental impact assessment in July 2026. The Spinazzola project, spread across the municipalities of Spinazzola and Minervino Murge, would combine panels with continued farming. Approval carries conditions: rows of panels removed to open ecological corridors, compensation across at least 30 per cent of the field area, a no-build zone around the 21-Archi Bridge and preventive archaeological excavation.
The plant approved is not the plant proposed. Solaria applied in December 2024 for 670 MW; review by local authorities and the culture ministry's superintendency shaved the design through successive revisions down to 599 MW, roughly a tenth smaller. Every local authority involved opposed the project and the culture ministry gave a negative opinion over high archaeological risk, yet a favourable view from a national review commission allowed the ministry to decree approval regardless.
Seventy megawatts is what total local opposition was worth. The councils and the archaeologists lost on the decision and won only on the dimensions, which suggests consultation here is a machine for trimming projects rather than for refusing them. National targets do not negotiate with local consent; they price it.

The US Federal Communications Commission has barred new equipment authorisations for foreign-assembled solar and battery inverters unless they already hold an FCC identification number. The order, effective on 29 July 2026, leaves projects unable to commission uncertified hardware or connect it to the grid. Domestic factories supply only seven per cent of the American inverter market, according to Department of Energy figures, while developers expect to add more than fifty-eight thousand megawatts of solar and storage within a year.
The decision effectively overrode a Department of Energy inspection from January 2026, which examined thirty Chinese inverters and found no malicious physical components. The White House judged that irrelevant, arguing that remotely pushed firmware updates were the real threat to the grid. The practical fallout compounds quickly: interconnection agreements name specific equipment models, so swapping a banned inverter for a compliant one counts as a Material Modification under standard utility rules, forcing a fresh engineering study and sending the finished project to the back of the queue.
The awkward ratio is seven against ninety-three. Washington has treated the place of assembly as evidence about the behaviour of software, without waiting for a secure domestic supply to exist. The result may reduce one digital vulnerability while exposing the grid to a much more immediate shortage.

Bhutan's Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is seeking a developer to fit grid-tied rooftop solar at three schools, with indicative capacities of 158.4, 144.1 and 381.7 kilowatts following preliminary site assessments. The winning bidder will design, supply, install and remotely monitor the arrays within eight months. Bids close on 24 August and are open to firms at home and abroad. The tender follows a rooftop call for seventy-three public healthcare facilities and a national invitation for unsolicited build-own-operate projects.
The small contract sits inside a much larger shift. In July the Asian Development Bank approved a 160-million-dollar loan toward 310 megawatts of new solar in Bhutan. The country's installed base had already climbed from three megawatts at the end of 2024 to twenty-one megawatts a year later, according to IRENA, most of the gain coming from a first utility-scale plant commissioned in mid-2025.
The three-hundred-and-ten-megawatt loan will get the attention; the school tender is the more telling instrument. A government that keeps issuing the same small contract — hospitals, then schools, then whatever roof is next — is building a habit of procurement, and habits install more capacity than masterplans do. Big money arrives once; a repeatable tender can run for decades.

Researchers at Fraunhofer ISE have published a family of standardised propane heat pump concepts for retrofitting multi-family buildings, developed with twenty companies from the heating and housing sectors under the LC R290 project. Working through example buildings with heating loads from 23 kW to 93 kW, the team concluded that no single configuration fits every block, and that design must follow building size, heat source, space and hot water demand.
The demonstrators span the cases: a central outdoor unit using 20 per cent less propane than comparable systems with 15 per cent higher efficiency, a 28 kW brine-to-water unit for indoors and a 4.9 kW apartment-level pump running on just 150 g of refrigerant — a charge small enough to permit installation in kitchens. The concepts are to be folded into a design software tool under a follow-up project.
The heating industry has been waiting for the heat pump equivalent of the gas boiler: one box that goes anywhere. Fraunhofer's real result is that this box does not exist, and that what can be standardised is not the appliance but the menu of configurations. That is a slower kind of scaling, and probably the only honest one for retrofit.
