Minnie Rose Lovgreen’s RECIPE FOR REARING CHICKENS

Posted on June 1, 2011 by

Sometimes Sean the postie brings a great surprise, and sometimes a real pearl. Today we were just bowled over with a truly delightful book by Minnie Rose Lovgreen called Recipe for Rearing Chickens. It is a book that has been lovingly created as a result of years of learning about how to nurture the humble chicken, a subject close to my heart, and it is just such a good read.
In 1912, Minnie and her brother decided that they would leave England and ‘go ahead better’ in Canada, they booked a passage on the Titanic, but arrived at the docks in Southampton to find that the voyage was delayed and so instead took another ship and arrived safely in Montreal.
In 1920 Minne married Leo Lovgreen, and together they saved and finally got their own dairy together, with six cows on a rented nine acre farm. Their farm prospered and 30 years later they had a herd of 75 cows and 170 acres of land. In April 1975, when this gem of a book first appeared, Minnie Rose was still living on a small farm, part of her original dairy. She grew fruit trees, berries, a vegetable garden and sheep, and of course, raised chickens.
She died in July 1975, by which time over 21000 copies of her little book had sold across the nation. Now, with the first two editions long out of print, the 3rd edition has been released, published by NW Trillium Press, on an ISBN 978-0-9824553-9-5, available at http://www.nwtrilliumpress.com/ link here
Anyway, get yourself a copy, get a big cup of English Breakfast Tea, a huge lump of fruit cake and a slab of cheddar cheese and a nice apple, and spend an hour in a comfy chair and enjoy reading this lovely, lovely book, if you close your eyes you might even hear Minnie reading it to you!
